L3AD
Visit L3ADL3AD is a production-grade digital manufacturing platform that operates as a virtual 3D printing factory. It unifies secure file management, AI-driven instant quoting, production tracking, warehousing, logistics, and admin operations into one intelligent ecosystem.
What is L3AD?
L3AD is a full-scale digital manufacturing ecosystem built for a 3D printing service bureau in Reutlingen, Germany, where quoting was previously a slow, manual process involving file review, geometry checks, and cost estimation, often taking hours or days and resulting in lost orders. PieStack developed a custom AI-powered quoting platform trained on L3AD’s historical production data, with the main challenge being the structuring and cleaning of scattered legacy data rather than model development. After multiple iterations and accuracy testing, Phase 1 launched in early 2026, covering the complete workflow from file upload to order shipment, reducing manual effort by over 70% and generating standard quotes in just 11 seconds. The platform operates 24/7, enabling instant responses even outside business hours, with Phase 2 currently focused on SaaS automation and global factory synchronization.

Services Provided
Objectives
- ◇Eliminate manual quoting by building an AI model trained on L3AD's own historical jobs, prices, and machines
- ◇Build a three-tier job routing system so every inquiry gets a response: instant AI quote for standard jobs, automatic flagging for edge cases, manual request path for custom work.
- ◇Deliver a complete manufacturing platform — covering production tracking, logistics automation, and admin portal.
Approach
The project began with a data audit, not a build. L3AD's historical job records were spread across spreadsheets, email threads, and inconsistently filled logs — years of estimating knowledge that existed in people's heads rather than in any structured form. PieStack built the ingestion pipeline and data structure. L3AD's production team provided the domain knowledge: which jobs were standard, which were exceptions, where historical pricing had drifted. Neither side could have done it alone. Initial model training produced directionally accurate results but not tight enough for production. The team identified where the model was miscalibrating on specific geometry types and material combinations, improved the labelling, and retrained. Nothing shipped until the quotes matched the production team's real-world knowledge. The platform was then built modularly across three interfaces: a public customer portal for self-serve quoting, an internal BD tool for the sales team with price override and discount controls, and an admin portal giving the L3AD operations team full visibility across every quote, order, production status, and pricing configuration.
The Problem: Manual Quoting Was Costing Orders
Every quote was handled by a staff estimator: file review, geometry assessment, material calculation, machine time. On a good day that took hours. On a busy week, requests queued. Customers submitted RFQs to multiple suppliers simultaneously. The first credible response wins a disproportionate share of those orders. L3AD was not consistently first.
- ◇Response times ran from hours to days on standard jobs.
- ◇No quoting capability outside business hours — Friday evening inquiries waited until Monday.
- ◇Estimator availability was a production bottleneck: one person out meant the queue stopped moving.
- ◇Customers found and placed orders with faster-responding competitors before L3AD replied.

The Hard Part: Data, Not Technology
Building an AI quoting engine is not primarily a technology problem. It is a data problem. Before any model could be trained, L3AD's historical job records had to be made usable. The data preparation phase took significantly longer than the model training itself — a ratio that holds across every AI manufacturing project.
- ◇Historical records spread across spreadsheets, email threads, and inconsistently filled job logs with varying field names and missing values.
- ◇Pricing rationale was often undocumented — years of estimating logic lived in the production team's heads, not in any structured form.
- ◇PieStack built the ingestion pipeline: normalising fields, encoding material types, flagging outliers, and creating a consistent training dataset.
- ◇L3AD's team provided domain knowledge on which records were reliable, which materials were standard, and where pricing had shifted over time.
- ◇Initial model output was directionally accurate but not tight enough for production. Miscalibrations were identified, labelling improved, and retraining cycles run until quotes matched real-world knowledge.
- ◇Nothing shipped until the quotes were right.

AI-Powered Instant Quoting Engine
The core intelligence layer. A customer uploads a 3D file. The platform reads the geometry, estimates material usage and machine time using the model trained on L3AD's own production history, and returns a production-ready quote. For standard jobs, that takes 11 seconds. No staff involvement required.
- ◇Automatically analyses uploaded 3D files for geometry, volume, surface area, and complexity.
- ◇Estimates material usage, machine time, and production cost using a model trained on L3AD's own historical jobs at their own prices.
- ◇Three-tier routing: instant AI quote for standard jobs, automatic flagging for edge cases outside supported parameters, manual request path for custom work. No customer hits a dead end.
- ◇Runs continuously — quotes are returned at any hour without waiting for a human estimator.
- ◇Improves over time: every completed job feeds back into pricing accuracy.

Production Dashboard (myFACTORY)
A centralised workspace for customers and production teams to manage the complete manufacturing lifecycle. Customers no longer chase status by email — every order's position in the production queue is visible in real time.
- ◇Upload and manage 3D files and production-ready assets from a single interface.
- ◇Create, confirm, and track production orders in real time.
- ◇Monitor production status, logistics, and delivery progress without contacting the team.
- ◇Communicate directly with assigned production managers inside the platform.

Secure File Library (theLIBRARY)
A secure, encrypted repository for managing sensitive manufacturing files. Versioning is built in so repeat orders do not require re-uploading identical files — every file is directly integrated with the quoting engine, production system, and logistics workflow.
- ◇Encrypted cloud storage for 3D models and production files.
- ◇Structured by client, project, and part typology for instant retrieval.
- ◇Versioning and repeat-production readiness — returning customers reorder without re-uploading.
- ◇Direct integration with AI quoting, production scheduling, and logistics.

Admin Portal & Operations Management
An internal portal giving the L3AD team full visibility and control across every quote, order, production status, logistics pipeline, and pricing configuration. The pricing model, material tables, and routing thresholds are configurable from this interface without developer involvement.
- ◇Manage and monitor all production orders and detailed order data across every job.
- ◇Track quote approvals, customer activity, and order statuses in one view.
- ◇Oversee production progress, logistics pipelines, and delivery status.
- ◇Configure operational settings, pricing rules, material tables, and routing thresholds.
- ◇Internal BD quoting tool with price override capability, discount controls, and account-level notes for relationship accounts.

Production, Logistics & Automation
End-to-end automation from quote approval through to delivery. No manual handoffs between systems — invoice generation, shipping calculation, carrier selection, and lead-time communication are all handled within the platform.
- ◇Production scheduling and global factory synchronisation.
- ◇Inventory and warehousing workflow management.
- ◇Automated logistics cost calculations for air and sea freight.
- ◇FedEx API integration and lead-time automation.
- ◇Payment processing integrated into the quote approval flow — invoice generated automatically on order confirmation.
